Hurricanes men's hoops team loses first ACAA game since February 2014

The Mount Saint Vincent Mystics ended the Holland College Hurricanes 42-game Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) men's basketball win streak on Saturday with a 74-64 win.

The Hurricanes had not lost in ACAA regular season and playoff games since February 2014 before Saturday's contest in Halifax.

Holland College led 19-18 after the first quarter, but trailed 40-34 at half and 60-45 heading into the fourth.

Travis Adams led the Hurricanes with 24 points while Derek Norris had 26 for the Mystics.

The 'Canes (14-1) lead the King's Blue Devils (11-4) and Crandall Chargers (10-4) in the ACAA standings.


The women's 'Canes defeated the Mystics 84-61 to push their winning streak to 11 games.

A fast start gave the Hurricanes a 19-7 lead after the first quarter. They led 48-31 at halftime and 67-51 after three quarters.

Jenea Barrett scored 28 points to lead the Hurricanes while Candace Smith chipped in 19 and Jazlin Barker added 14. Ashley Moss had 10 rebounds.

Kate Gallant was the Mystics top scorer with 20.

The Hurricanes (12-1) are in first place in the ACAA standings ahead of the Crandall Chargers (9-3) and Mount Allison Mounties (8-4).

The Hurricanes host the Mounties on Sunday with the women playing at 2 p.m. and the men at 4 p.m.
