The Christmas break is over for the UPEI Panthers men’s basketball team.

The squad practised once Monday, twice Tuesday and will hit the court again today in preparation for the Rod and Joan Shoveller Memorial Basketball Tournament in Halifax on New Year’s Day.

“I think it’s real important to play games before you play the more-meaningful games in league play,” head coach Tim Kendrick said before Tuesday’s practice.

“As good as practice can be sometimes, you can’t simulate a game.”

UPEI played its last game before the Christmas break on Nov. 29 and players started leaving for Christmas on Dec. 12.

There will be no easing back into games for the Panthers, as Kendrick said he would be using his regular rotation and coaching to win.

“We’re going to make sure that our guys understand that we’re back, here we are, let’s make sure we’re trying to win every basketball game.”

The Panthers begin the Shoveller tournament Friday at 3 p.m. against the St. F.X. X-Men. The Panthers swept them on the opening weekend of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) regular season in early November.

The Panthers are 5-2 and tied with Dalhousie, Cape Breton and Acadia for top spot in the eight-team conference while St. F.X. (1-5) is last.

Kendrick said he expected the X-Men to play with some desperation.

“They need some wins and need to get off to a good start in the second half,” he said.

The Panthers dropped the final two games before the Christmas break at Acadia. While the team remembers reasons why they lost the games, they are not dwelling on it, the coach said.

“In a 20-game season, you can’t get stuck on a loss here and a loss there,” he said. “You have to have short memories in the basketball world.”

Bluefield and Holland College graduate Jon Hovingh is expected to play in the first half of the St. F.X. game after being added to the roster for the second semester.
