Arch-rivals Three Oaks and Colonel Gray to decide senior AAA boys' basketball tournament

SUMMERSIDE – It will be an all-P.E.I. championship game in the 23rd annual Three Oaks Senior High School Christmas Classic.

The host Three Oaks Axemen will face the Colonel Gray Colonels from Charlottetown in the winner-take-all final of the eight-team senior AAA boys’ basketball tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. Both teams went 3-0 (won-lost) in round-robin play to finish first in their respective pools.

The Axemen will be looking to win their first Christmas Classic title since back-to-back banners in 2010 and 2011.

The Axemen opened tournament play with an 88-40 win over the Bluefield Bobcats on Thursday, and followed that up with two wins Friday – 86-53 over the Dr. John Hugh Gillis Royals from Antigonish, N.S., and 84-49 versus the James M. Hill Tommies of Miramichi, N.B.

The Colonels defeated the Charlottetown Rural Raiders 75-64 on Thursday, and topped the Amherst Vikings 62-56 and the defending-champion Prince Andrew Panthers from Dartmouth, N.S., 77-60 on Friday.

Following is a look at Friday’s games:


Axemen 86

Dr. J.H. Gillis 53

The Axemen, led by Cameron Paynter’s 26-point effort, built a 51-32 lead at halftime.

Logan MacDougall (16) and Matt Tanton (11) were the Axemen’s other top two scorers.

Patrick Bower led J.H. Gillis with 14 points, and Rayley Bowen added 12.

Players of the game were MacDougall and Peter Storseth (J.H. Gillis).


Axemen 84

James M. Hill 49

Tanton (14), Nathan Perry (12) and Keith Johnston (10) led the Axemen’s balanced attack.

Jayden McIntyre had 10 points to pace James M. Hill, which trailed 53-21 at halftime.

Players of the game were Logan Cameron (Axemen) and Ben Caoguo (James M. Hill).


Bluefield 70

James M. Hill 62

Alex MacKenzie (11), Dylan MacKinnon (9) and Isaac Cheverie (9) were Bluefield’s top offensive producers.

Christien Dickson led James M. Hill with seven points.

Bluefield led 27-23 at halftime.


Dr. J.H. Gillis 79

Bluefield 55

Kieran Scott registered 30 points to lead the winners.

Cheverie (16), MacKinnon (15) and Caleb Guindon (5) were Bluefield’s top offensive producers.

Dr. J.H. Gillis was in front 43-29 at halftime.


Colonel Gray 62

Amherst Vikings 56

Gray overcame a 13-point deficit – 29-16 – at halftime.

Matt Connolly (23) sparked Gray’s attack.

Jordan Dyck (17), Blake Thompson (13) and Joel McCrossin (13) had strong performances for Amherst.


Colonel Gray 77

Prince Andrew 60

Stew Campbell scored 29 points while Yousef Sefau had 12 to lead Gray. Connolly added nine points.

For Prince Andrew, which trailed 37-22 at halftime, Zack Frasier led the way with a 26-point effort.


Amherst 72

Charlottetown Rural 53

Joel McCrossin (18), Nabil Mohamad (17) and Dyck (14) all had strong offensive games to lead Amherst.

Josh Bourque was Rural’s leading scorer with 20.

Amherst held a 33-28 cushion at the break.


Prince Andrew 58

Charlottetown Rural 51

Mateo Clayton Oliver (12), Brent Draper (10) and Thackery Wallis (10) all scored in double digits to lead defending-champion Prince Andrew, which held a 35-19 advantage at the half.

Josh Bourque had a game-high 15 points for Rural.




Saturday’s games in Christmas Classic:

9 a.m. – John Hugh Gillis vs. James M. Hill (Three Oaks); Amherst vs. Prince Andrew (Summerside Intermediate).

11:30 a.m. – Third-place team in Green Pool vs. third-place team in Red Pool (Three Oaks); fourth-place team in Green Pool vs. fourth-place team in Red Pool (Summerside Intermediate).

1:15 p.m. – Second-place team in Green Pool vs. second-place team in Red Pool (Three Oaks).

3 p.m. – Championship game: first-place team in Green Pool vs. first-place team in Red Pool (Three Oaks).
