Smith leads Team Black to win in Island Storm intrasquad game

Dwayne Smith led Team Black to a 107-97 victory over Team White Saturday in Souris in the Island Storm’s annual intrasquad game.

The Toronto native had 17 points, six rebounds and one steal in almost 26 minutes of play.

Others scoring in double digits for Black were: Rashad Whack (15 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals), Brent Jennings (13 points, seven rebounds, two assists), Carlos Emery (12 points, four rebounds, a game-high seven assists and a steal), Ike Azotam (11 points, three rebounds and a steal), Toronto’s Renaldo Dixon (11 points, three rebounds and an assist) and Windsor, Ont., native Gary Gibson (10 points, three rebounds, six assists and two steals).

Nick Evans had seven points, nine rebounds, an assist, a block and a steal and Edmonton’s Kenny Otieno chipped in with nine points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal.

Team White’s Mike Martin had a game-high 32 points while adding eight rebounds, two assists and one steal. 

"Mike Martin was just phenomenal . . . as good as I've seen him play," Storm head coach Joe Salerno.

Other Team White players scoring 10 or more points were Malcolm Grant (17 points, four rebounds, five assists and four steals) and Nick Carter (10 points, a rebound and a steal).

Billy Rush chipped in with nine points and five assists while Andre Malone had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Toronto’s Robert Nortmann had eight points, six rebounds, a block and a steal) while Halifax’s Terry Thomas had eight points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Philadelphia’s Denzel Jackson contributed five points, nine rebounds, two blocks, an assist and a steal.

Black held quarter leads of 23-20, 54-43 and 85-74.

Training camp continues this week with the team’s first exhibition game on Friday in Sydney, N.S., against the Halifax Hurricanes.  

There are 18 players vying for one of the 12 roster spots for the Storm’s opening night on Boxing Day against the the Saint John Mill Rats at 2 p.m.
