Island Storm coach Joe Salerno was embarrassed by his team’s performance Sunday in losing 120-111 to the last-place Moncton Miracles.

The Saint John Mill Rats pounded the Miracles by 48 on Saturday and the Storm had a week to prepare.

“To come out here and lose in the nature we did to a team that’s coming off a back-to-back . . . it’s embarrassing how much tougher they were than us,” Salerno said.

“It’s as if the Windsor game has completely got to our heads.”

The Storm is 0-2 since defeating the Windsor Express on Jan. 16.

“Guys were just not defending or making things tough for other teams a priority. We just want to get the ball back in our hands and try to outscore people,” Salerno said.

The Storm fell behind early Sunday, but went on a 13-0 run in 2:42 to tie the game late in the second quarter.

Moncton jumped ahead early in the third and withstood any of the Storm’s pushes to try to get back in the game.

“We just have to pick up our defensive intensity,” said Storm shooting forward Brandon Robinson. “We have to stop teams in order to win. We’re not going to beat teams letting them shoot over 50 per cent every night on us.”

Moncton guard Shawn Vanzant, who played with the Storm last season, said it was an important bounce-back victory after Saturday’s loss, the team’s fifth-straight defeat.

“We needed that one bad,” Vanzant said. “I think it shows character and we’re moving in the right direction.”

The Miracles improved to 7-16 while the Storm falls to 15-8.

The Storm hits the road for Ontario this week with games in Brampton on Thursday and in Mississauga on Friday. Both games are 8 p.m. Atlantic starts. “If we don’t get our head on straight, as far as a team committing to playing defence, we’re going to go out to Ontario this week and get pounded,” Salerno said.
