A short-staffed Island Storm lost 125-122 Friday to the Brampton A’s in National Basketball League of Canada play Friday in Charlottetown.

The team started the day with point guard Sammy Zeglinksi being placed on the injured reserve list after tweaking a leg injury in last weekend’s games.

It got worse when leading scorer and rebounder Brandon Robinson went down with an apparent ankle injury 2:28 into the game.

The bench got shorter when centre Mike Williams went down with what looked like an ankle injury in third quarter. He was limited to 12 minutes due to a leg injury as the Storm played most of the game without 60 per cent of its starting lineup.

“We still played them down to the wire. No reason to hang our heads,” said point guard Avery Smith, who played his first game of the season. “Tonight I think we showed a lot of grit, we showed what kind of team we are.”

Coach Joe Salerno was pleased with the effort the team showed.

“We never quit and kept fighting,” he said. “It’s still a game we could have won and we didn’t get it done.”

The coach was disappointed the things the team spent time on in practice, like limiting dribble penetration, cost them.

“As they soon as they beat you one on one they’re going to find shooters on the perimeter,” he said. “That’s the frustrating part: we knew that. We talked about it all week. We should have done a better job of that tonight.”

Louis Birdsong Jr. led the way for the home side with 22 points while Rashad Whack and Smith each had 21. Billy Rush had his best game as a Storm with 18 points and eight rebounds.

Flenard Whitfield was top gun for the A’s with a double-double scoring 24 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Akeem Scott added 22 points.

The Storm is 5-5 on the season while Brampton won its fourth straight game to improve to 4-5.

The Moncton Miracles come to town Sunday for a 2 p.m. game with the Storm.

“We just want to get back out there and get us a win,” Smith said.

Robinson was going for x-rays after Friday’s game and his status for Sunday’s contest was not known.
