An eventful stretch drive gave way to a healthy payday for Saulsbrook Alana Saturday afternoon at Exhibition Park Raceway in Saint John, N.B.

The three-year-old Western Paradise filly rallied from off the pace to win the $13,016 second heat of The Maritimer in 1:59 to win the crown over Lovineveryminute (Todd Trites) and Pictonian Sareta (Mike Stevenson).

Earlier on the card, Elm Grove Inarush (Mark Bradley) won her $9,762 elimination in 2:00.3 with Howmac Missy (Marc Campbell) second and Pictonian Sareta third.

The other elimination was won by Lovineveryminute in 2:00.3 over Saulsbrook Alana (Campbell) and Absolootly Hot (Kenny Arsenault).

In the second and final heat, four races later, Elm Grove Inarush made a break at the start off the rail for a tardy beginning, leaving the race wide-open for Lovineveryminute to take control of the lead and pace a 28.3 first quarter.

Elm Grove Inarush moved first up before the first quarter to engage the leader at the three-eighths mark with Trites pressing the gas pedal to keep her out with a 57.2 half-mile. Absolootly Hot tired in the two-hole, allowing Elm Grove Inarush to slip in up the backstretch before the 1:26.4 three-quarters.

While this transpired, Saulsbrook Alana was advancing slowly first on the outside, getting to fourth place at the three-quarters. Elm Grove Inarush and Pictonian Sareta swung out of second and third off the final turn with Elm Grove Inarush’s wheel coming into contact with Pictonian Sareta at the head of the stretch. Saulsbrook Alana drove up the inside of her tired rivals for a three-length 1:59 win.

Saulsbrook Alana is trained by Kevin MacLean for owner Reg MacPherson of Stratford.
