Reds respond late to beat Manitoba at girls softball nationals

Manitoba tied game in top of sixth, P.E.I. scores three in bottom of inning for win

The P.E.I. Scotiabank Reds defeated Manitoba Two 7-4 Wednesday for their first victory at the under-18 Canadian girls’ softball tournament in Saskatoon.

Trailing 4-2 heading to the sixth, Manitoba scored twice to tie it. The Reds replied with three in their half of the inning and took care of business in the top of the seventh to improve to 1-3.

Brailyne Jenkins and Jacinda Costello each had two hits and a run. Hope Higginbotham, Jada Yeo, Emily Cairns and Sarah Woodside each had a hit and scored a run. Higginbotham, Jenkins and Kaylan Ellsworth were credited with RBIs.

Jordon Havenga threw a complete game six-hitter for the win. She struck out two and walked one.

The round robin ends Wednesday night and playoff schedules were not available at press time.
