Meg MacKinnon is the latest recruit to join the Holland College Hurricanes women’s volleyball team.
Meg MacKinnon will be wearing the Holland College Hurricanes uniform this fall when she steps on the volleyball court.
The college announced the five-foot-nine middle’s commitment on Tuesday. The Charlottetown native, who will be enrolling in the practical nursing program, played for UPEI’s club team last year and was a member of the 2013 Canada Games team.
“On top of my excitement to start my program I’m really looking forward to getting back onto the court,” MacKinnnon said. “Volleyball is such a passion for me and I get such a thrill from the sport and the family-like atmosphere that being a member of a team provides.”
MacKinnon won three provincial high school championships with the Colonel Gray Colonels, was named a Volleyball P.E.I. all-star from 2009 to 2011 and was the Volleyball P.E.I. senior athlete of the year in 2011.
She joins Sydney Foy, Hannah Oatway, Laura Ready and Dana Trainor as new additions to a Hurricanes team that went 1-17 last season.
“As a team we will have to come out hard right from the start of the season and I know we will turn some heads,” MacKinnon said. “This is a huge building year for the ‘Canes and I feel that with the calibre of players we are gaining we are going to impress a lot of people with our play.”
Coach Lori-Beth Dwyer said she is “thrilled” with the addition of MacKinnon.
“Her aggressive play will add strength to our front row and her competitive experience is a great asset,” she said.
The Hurricanes begin training camp in September with the regular season beginning on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 6 p.m. at home versus the Universite Sainte-Anne Dragons.
