Men's basketball coach not applying for vacant Acadia job

Tim Kendrick is staying put.

Members of the Island basketball community were concerned Wednesday when Acadia announced men’s basketball coach Stephen Baur resigned to take a position with Canada women’s hoops team. Kendrick is from Wolfville, N.S., and has been inducted as a player and coach to the Horton High School hall of fame.

“I’m here for as long as they’ll have me,” Kendrick told The Guardian on Friday.

He was pleased with UPEI’s response Thursday to the review of the athletics department.

“It’s going to be a great place around here for the next several years and I want to be a part of it,” Kendrick said.

“Enough about the past now. They’ve done what people have asked,” he added.

“Let’s turn the page now . . . and really get behind the university and the athletics department.”

Kendrick coached Horton for 22 years, compiling a 707-189 record and a 73-game unbeaten streak from 2006 to 2008, which is an unofficial Canadian record. He coached Nova Scotia to a silver medal at the 2009 Canada Games in Summerside.

He left Horton for his first Atlantic University Sport (AUS) coaching job at UPEI in 2011.

“They gave me the opportunity here,” Kendrick said. “Loyalty is a huge thing for me.”

During his three years as head coach of the Panthers, the team has three straight third-place finishes.

Kendrick, who signed a three-year contract extension about a year ago, said if practices could start today it wouldn’t come soon enough. He is looking forward to getting his team on the court in September and taking a run at a conference championship.

He said the team would be announcing a new recruit in the coming days. It has already announced a half a dozen new players, including former Acadia Axemen Tyler Scott and Bradley States, are joining the program this year.
