Team P.E.I. has strong finish at Special Olympics Canada Summer Games

Team P.E.I. had a strong finish to the 2014 Special Olympics Canada National Summer Games during the weekend in Vancouver.

The Island contingent completed the nationals with 11 gold, nine silver and 18 bronze medals.

Athletics

Jeremy Wall recorded gold medals in the 800 metres and shot put, and one bronze in the 3,000-metre race.

Teri Cudmore also collected three medals — bronze in the long jump and 200 metres, and silver in the 100 metres.

John Paynter won a pair of bronze medals in the 100 and 200 metres.

Golf

In golf, P.E.I.’s lone participant Heidi Mallett earned a bronze medal.

Swimming

Sarah Halman enjoyed success in the pool, winning a silver medal in backstroke and a bronze in the 50-metre freestyle.

Bowling

In five-pin bowling, Caitlyn Barlow won silver and Jean MacEachern collected a bronze medal.

In 10-pin bowling, Jenna Smith won gold in doubles, gold in singles and bronze for third overall in her division, and Kevin Ramsay was a double gold-medallist — singles and doubles.

Softball

In a team sport competition, P.E.I. won the bronze medal in softball.

The Summer Games concluded on Saturday, and Team P.E.I. was scheduled to arrive at the Charlottetown Airport late Sunday night.
