Post position is key in tonight's fillies and mares open pace at Red Shoresat the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The 12-dash card begins at 7 p.m.

Last week's winner of the $2,250 feature, JK Special, had rail control the last time out, but is shouldered with the dreaded Post 8 in Race 11 on a half-mile track tonight.

Kenny Arsenault will drive the mare this week for owner-trainer Joe Smallwood but she has her work cut out with tough competitors like General Luckypercy (Ron Matheson) and Veronicavermillion (Brodie MacPhee) leaving from Post 1 and 2, respectively. Veronicavermillion used her rally from behind tactics two weeks ago, but received a minor share finishing fourth last week and will be looking for redemption.

"Despite kicking home well last week, the soft early fractions just left the eventual winner too hard to catch," said race analyst Les MacIsaac. "We'll look for a little more pace tonight which suits her rallying style."

The race will also see the return of Dirt Track Momma, one of the top mares of the 2013 season, with Marc Campbell in the bike for trainer Jonah Moase, who will send three mares behind the gate in the race. Other entries include Silky Britches (Corey MacPherson), Andro Madi (Dale Spence), Stayoutofmyaffair (Jason Hughes) and Cool One (Mike Stevenson).

The evening trot class lines up in Race 3 for a $1,150 purse with more position trouble for owner-trainer Smallwood, who has Post 8 with favourite JK Queen (Corey MacPherson). She will face seven rivals including Centrifical Force (Mike McGuigan) and Dunmore Alpha (Ted Smallwood).

A gritty group of conditioned pacers will put their noses on the gate in Race 7 for a $1,600 purse with IDK favoured from Post 7 for co-owner and driver Vincent Poulton, co-owner and trainer Gary Poulton and co-owner Gail MacDonald, all of Charlottetown. The Stand Forever six-year-old will have to fight off challenges from Le Fugueur (Campbell) and Every Day (Brian Andrew).
