Island sprinter only double winner at track and field championships

Jared Connaughton

New Haven’s Jared Connaughton was the only double winner at the Athletics Canada indoor open Track and Field Championships in Montreal during the weekend.

Connaughton had the best time (6.80) in the prelims of the 60-metre open and followed it with a meet-best 6.71 in the final.

He won the 200-metre invitational with a winning time of 21.64 followed up by Quebec’s Harold Vulgaire 22.21 and Alberta’s Ricardo Charles 22.22.

Connaughton, 28, is gearing up for the 2014 outdoor season, which begins next month at the prestigious Texas relays in Austin, Texas.

Connaughton has previously won the 100-metre open and been a part of International 4x100 relay gold medal team at the Texas relays.

He will also get ready for the IAAF World Relays May 24 and 25, the Canadian Outdoor Championships in Moncton at the end of June and the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to Aug. 3.
