UPEI meeting Cape Breton in both men's, women's action
The UPEI Panthers will face the Cape Breton Capers Friday in a quarter-final at the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s basketball championship.
The Panthers (11-9) finished third in the conference and will meet the sixth-place Capers (9-11) at the Halifax Metro Centre.
UPEI won both meetings this season with Cape Breton, 89-85 on Nov. 29 in Sydney, N.S., and 98-60 on Jan. 10 in Charlottetown.
The quarter-final game time is set for 8:15 p.m. while the 6 p.m. game will see the St. F.X. X-Men play the UNB Varsity Reds.
Acadia and Saint Mary’s, the conference’s top two seeds, respectively, have byes into Saturday’s semifinal.
If the Panthers win, they would face Saint Mary’s at 8:15 p.m. Saturday. The final will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.
Panther Fans interested in taking the fan bus can sign up by visiting or calling Panther Central at 566-0368. Cost is $90 plus the game ticket.
The bus will depart UPEI on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. and return on March 2 after the championship game. Seats will be not confirmed unless paid and a minimum of 40 people is required by noon Wednesday for the bus to go.

The women Panthers will play the Cape Breton Capers on Friday, March 7 in quarter-final play on home court.
Game time is 8 p.m.
UPEI is hosting this year’s six-team championship from March 7 to 9.
The Capers (11-9) swept the Panthers (9-11) this season, winning 82-70 on Nov. 29 in Sydney and 67-65 on Jan. 10 in Charlottetown.
Fourth-place Memorial meets Dalhousie at 6 p.m. in the other quarter-final.
Undefeated Saint Mary’s and second-place St. F.X. have byes into Saturday’s semifinal. UPEI would play the X-Women if they win Friday’s quarter-final.
The final is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
