The UPEI Panthers used big second and fourth quarters to end the regular season on a winning note Friday in Atlantic University (AUS) men’s basketball.
The Panthers led the St. F.X. X-Men 15-13 after the first quarter, but took a 43-32 lead to the break. St. F.X. reduced the lead by two (67-58) heading to the fourth, but was outscored 29-19 in the final period, as the Panthers took a 96-77 victory in their last home game of the season.
Panthers starters Ellis Ffrench (18), Geoff Doane (17) and Donathan (Donnie) Moss (15) were the top scorers while Lorenzo Parker added 10 off the bench.
Aaron Robbins had four points, five rebounds, three assists, three blocks and two steals in his final home game. Senior Joe Kendrick had seven points, three boards, two dimes and a steal.
William Donkoh with 14 points and Julius Antoine with 13 were the X-Men’s top scorers.
UPEI improved to 11-9 and is two points up on St. F.X. (11-8) for third place in the conference standings. The X-Men play at UNB (9-10) tonight at 8 p.m. in a four-point game to end the season.
The AUS championships begin Friday in Halifax.
