X-Women squeak by Panthers in AUS basketball

Kolbi Roper scored 25 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the St. F.X. X-Women to a 69-66 victory over the UPEI Panthers Friday in Atlantic University Sport (AUS) women’s basketball action.

Amy Gough with 13 points and 10 rebounds led the Panthers, who complete the regular season with a 9-11 record. It is their best record since finishing 9-11 in 2004-05. St. F.X. improved to 9-10 and can clinch second place with a victory today at UNB.

Laura Power added 10 points and Katie Donahoe nine for the Panthers, who shot 31 per cent from the field, but scored 22 points from the free-throw line on 82 per cent shooting.

UPEI led 13-11 through the first quarter but trailed 31-27 at the half and 50-46 going to the fourth.

The Panthers, who finished sixth in the eight-team conference, will host the AUS championships from March 7 to 9.
