Colonel Gray Colonels win Sweetheart tournament

SUMMERSIDE – The Colonel Gray Colonels won the Three Oaks Senior High School Sweetheart basketball tournament on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonels defeated longtime rival Three Oaks Axewomen 78-49 in the championship game at the Three Oaks gymnasium.

The Colonels, who are undefeated in P.E.I. School Athletic Association Senior AAA Girls Basketball League play, completed play in the two-day tournament, which attracted eight teams from P.E.I., Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, undefeated at 3-0. Three Oaks was 2-1.

Jenna Mae Ellsworth scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Colonels in the final. Jada Yeo sank 20 points and tournament most valuable player Kendra Craswell added 16.

Charlotte Thompson and Ashley Simmons each had 13 points for the Axewomen, who received an 11-point effort from Jessica Gillis.

Gray built a comfortable 43-24 lead at the half.

Earlier Saturday, Three Oaks, led by 16-point efforts by Thompson and Julie Campbell, defeated James M. Hill 72-45 while Colonel Gray topped Amherst 73-38 in the semifinals. Jada Yeo led the Colonels with 13 points.

In other games Saturday, the Bluefield Bobcats beat Miramichi Valley 48-37; the Charlottetown Rural Raiders downed the North Nova Gryphons 68-33 and Bluefield 75-58; Miramichi Valley won 57-42 over North Nova, and Amherst edged James M. Hill 75-74 in the third-place game.
