Cortese's shootout goal gives Islanders close win over Cataractes

Anthony Cortese scored the lone goal of the shootout to give the Charlottetown Islanders a 4-3 win over the Shawinigan Cataractes in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action Friday night at Eastlink Centre.

Daniel Sprong, Craig MacLauchlan and Bradley Kennedy scored regulation-time goals for the Islanders, who improved to 17-21-1-4 .

Gabriel Slight, Alexis D’Aoust and Sébastien Gauthier countered for the Cataractes (10-27-3-3).

Winning goaltender Mason MacDonald stopped 44 shots through the three regulation periods and overtime.

Shawinigan goaltender Storm Phaneuf faced 31 shots.

The teams were tied 1-1 after the first period, and Shawinigan took a 2-1 cushion into the second intermission.

The Islanders host the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Sunday at 3 p.m.
