The Island Storm has added some size to its lineup.
The National Basketball League of Canada team announced Monday night it had signed six-foot-11 centre Phil Jones and released Semaj Inge.
“It has become quite evident to be competitive in this Atlantic Division we needed to add some size and depth to our front court,” said head coach Joe Salerno.
Jones signed a contract with the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves in September 2012. He was later placed on waivers and ended up in the developmental league with the Los Angeles D-Fenders and Sioux Falls Skyforce.
Jones, from Nashville, Tennessee, played four years at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. His best year was 2010-11 where the senior averaged more than 7.5 points per game and nearly six rebounds per game.
“Phil is a proven big who has played at very high levels. We have been struggling defensively in the paint, and losing the rebounding battle consistently to the likes of Halifax and Moncton,” Salerno said. “Phil should be a significant addition to our roster and contribute on both sides of the ball.”
Jones is expected to be on the Island Wednesday night and will be in the Storm lineup Saturday when the London Lightning comes to town in a rematch of last year’s final.
