Island sprinter makes all-time track and field honour role

Jared Connaughton

New Haven sprinter Jared Connaughton has made the Southland Conference’s all-time outdoor track and field honour roll.

The list was announced Friday as part of the conference’s 50th anniversary.

The men’s honour roll includes 119 student-athletes going back the initial spring season of 1964, when the first Southland meet was held in Abilene, Texas.

Connaughton was one of 14 men selected from Texas-Arlington, which had the most men’s selections.

Connaughton, the two-time Olympian, was the conference’s 100-metre dash champion in 2006 and the 200-metre champ in 2006 and 2007. He was named the outstanding track performer and athlete of the year in 2006.

Texas-Arlington led with 14 men’s selections

The Southland held its first outdoor championship for women in 1986 at Arlington, Texas, and the women’s honoree list includes 117 all-time standouts.
