CORNWALL — The Charlottetown Rural Raiders swept the Westisle Wolverines in P.E.I. School Athletic Association senior AAA soccer semifinals on Wednesday.
Julia MacSwain scored in the 12th minute off a challenge with Westisle keeper Julia O’Halloran, and that goal stood up in a 1-0 Raiders’ victory.
The Rural boys scored four unanswered second-half goals to hand the Wolverines a 6-2 setback.
Sam Smiley scored three times to lead the Raiders, who also received goals from James Foster (2) and Jordan DeJong.
Kenan Wilkie scored two quick goals for the Wolverines late in the first half to send the teams into the break tied 2-2
In the other boys’ semifinal, Melvin Sim Turay scored his second goal of the game in overtime — the 103rd minute — to give the Colonel Gray Colonels a 4-3 win over the Bluefield Bobcats. Alex O’Brien made a strong run down the right side and laid a nice cross to set up the game-winning goal.
The Colonel Gray girls are off to the gold-medal game after a 2-1 victory over Bluefield.
All of the game’s scoring took place in the first half, with Cassie Feehan and Emma Clark staking Gray to a 2-0 lead.
Madyson Doucette responded for the Bluefield squad.
All four senior AAA semifinals were played at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall. The gold- and bronze-medal games will be played Saturday.
