The P.E.I. Hunter’s Ale House Mudmen lost 42-15 decision to Halifax Tars in the Nova Scotia Men’s Rugby League Division 1 championship game Saturday in Halifax, N.S.
P.E.I. had lost twice to Tars in the regular season.
It was the first time P.E.I. reached the Division 1 final. It had lost three previous times in semifinal games.
“We played great, but in the end they were too strong for us. We came out with a fast start and dominated in a lot of areas, but a couple of lapses killed us. If we made the slightest mistake they would capitalize on us. We played the game we wanted to play, but were just outmatched,” said Phil Gallant, a longtime member of the Mudmen.
P.E.I. moved into the First Division this season after several years in Division 2 where is won back-to-back Division 2 and Maritime titles the past two campaigns.
In Division 1 play this year, the Mudmen went 7-3, including winning four of their last five games.
They earned the second seed in the playoffs, a home playoff game and beat a tough Halifax RFC squad in the semifinal to reach the final against Tars.
“The loss hurts, but at the same time we were so excited with our season. Talking to all the guys (Saturday) I think more then ever we are excited for the potential we will have next season. It makes us want to put in the extra work in the off-season,” said Gallant.
