Former Evening Patriot columnist to be inducted into the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame
One of the province's most notable builders of sport, the late Bill Ledwell of St. Peters, will become a member of the P.E.I. Sports Hall of Fame later this week.
The 2013 induction ceremony will be held Friday in Charlottetown.
A fine athlete during his student days at St. Dunstan's University, where he won a Maritime hockey championship in 1947, his lifelong contribution to Island sports is headlined by his role as a highly respected and knowledgeable sports columnist with the Evening Patriot newspaper, sharing his views and knowledge for more than four decades.
He had a remarkable ability to tell a story, and his columns and articles were effortless to read, giving the reader a sense of being on the inside of what was happening.
Ledwell worked on publications as diverse as Time Magazine, the Toronto Star and Atlantic Insight, and he was recognized in 1989 with the prestigious Doug Gilbert Newspaper Sports Writer Award from the Sports Federation of Canada.
It was said that nobody had more local hockey knowledge than Ledwell, and he played a key role in the establishment of the P.E.I. Hockey Association.
He was an outstanding coach, official and administrator, and was recognized with a Canadian Hockey Association Award of Merit and a lifetime membership from the provincial body for his outstanding contribution to the sport.
His love of sport saw him serve on the selection committee of the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame for 30 years, he was chairman of the P.E.I. Sports Hall and was a member of the Sport P.E.I. founding committee.
In addition, he was heavily involved with the university, serving as president of the UPEI Alumni Association in the 1980s, and was the first recipient of the UPEI Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990.
In his work as a provincial civil servant in the library system, he was a pioneer in the development of the 23 provincial branch libraries.
Ledwell never sought the glory or accolades, but he will always be remembered as a giant, and a pioneer, of Island sport.
