The UPEI Panthers went 4-1 to finish second at the first Atlantic university field hockey tournament of the season.
The Panthers lost 1-0 Sunday morning to Saint Mary’s. The Huskies went 5-0 to claim top spot in the six-team round robin.
Eliza MacLauchlan scored the lone goal of the game against St. F.X. in the opening game of the tournament on Saturday.
The fourth-year player from Charlottetown scored four goals to lead the Panthers this weekend.
MacLauchlan and Emily Ross scored in a 2-1 win over UNB. UPEI ended Saturday with an 8-0 victory over Acadia. MacLauchlan and Sydney Stavert each scored twice while singles went to Katherine Koughan, Michelle Clow, Haley Grimmer and Ross.
In the team’s final game on Sunday, the Panthers defeated Dalhousie 2-0 behind goals from Stavert and Taylor Coleman.
The next tournament is Oct. 5 and 6 at UNB.
Results from the two tournaments will be used to seed teams for the championship tournament Oct. 19 and 20 in Halifax.
The St. F.X. X-Women defeated the UPEI Panthers 82-0 on Saturday.
The win improved the perennial powerhouse X-Women to 3-1 while the Panthers fall to 1-2.
Centre Vanessa Duffley led the X-Women with three trys while Miranda Sample, Beckie Clark and Sara Gandy each had two. Clark is a first-year arts student from Summerside. Sabrina McDaid kicked 11 converts.
Duffley and UPEI’s Megan Thorpe were named players of the games.
The two teams play again Sunday at 3 p.m. in Antigonish, N.S.
The University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UOIT) swept a pair of exhibition women’s hockey games from the UPEI Panthers in weekend action.
The Ridgebacks won 5-2 Saturday and 3-0 on Friday at MacLauchlan Arena.
Summerside’s Olivia Doughart and O’Leary’s Sam Sweet scored for the Panthers on Saturday. Assists went to Lyndsay Oakes, Anja Weisser and Teagan Pringle.
Each team scored one power-play goal.
Marie Soleil Deschenes made 22 saves in the loss.
The Ridgebacks had 2-0 and 4-2 leads after the first and second periods, respectively.
UOIT led Friday’s game 1-0 after two periods. Deschenes made 17 saves in the loss.
The Panthers are back in action Oct. 4 and 5 for a pair of exhibition games against St. F.X. in Antigonish, N.S. They start the regular season at home Oct. 18 when they host the Saint Mary’s Huskies at 7 p.m.
The men’s team returned home with a 2-1 record.
The Panthers defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 2-1 Thursday in Fredericton and Trois Rivieres 4-3 in overtime on Friday. They lost 3-1 to Ottawa on Saturday. Jordan Mayer and Cody McNaughton scored against the Tommies. Chris Desousa had two goals, including the winner, against Trois Rivieres while Matt Brenton and Mason Wilgosh had singles.
Desousa had the lone goal against Ottawa.
The Panthers host Dalhousie Friday at 7:30 p.m. The regular season starts Oct. 18 in Halifax against Dalhousie.
