Molly Molyneaux may have a new favourite golf club.
The 17-year-old Charlottetown native aced the 16th hole Saturday with her seldom-used 4-hybrid at the Milby Golf Club in Sherbrooke, Que. The hole in one came during the final round of the Canada Games competition.
“All day I had been missing four-foot putts, lipping out, just doing bad on the greens,” Molyneaux explained Saturday night before the closing ceremonies.
“On 16, I got up there and pulled out my nemesis club, my club that I hate. I never use it.”
Her drive landed on the front of the green, kicked off the front and rolled into the hole with Molyneaux watching from the tee.
“I got to see it go in. My first thought was, ‘I don’t have to putt.’”
It is her second career ace. The first came two years ago on No. 11 at Belvedere while playing with Morgan Bell.
“This one was pretty surreal,” Molyneaux said of Saturday’s accomplishment. “It was kind of a good ending to my junior career.”
Molyneaux had the best round of the Island’s three women’s golfers during the final round. She shot a 13-over 86 while Erin Brown had a 91 and Bailey Carr a 96.
On the men’s side, Connor Shea led the way with a 77 while Tyson Gavin and Jordan Birt each at 78.
It has been a busy couple of weeks for Molyneaux and her family.
She left P.E.I. July 27 for Pickering, Ont., for the Royale Cup Canadian junior girls golf championship. From there they went to Savannah, Georgia, where Molyneaux is attending Armstrong Atlantic State University and up to the Games. Molyneaux returned to Georgia after the Games as classes began last week.
“I am really looking forward to having a lot of time to work on my game,” she said.
