SUMMERSIDE — If Rod MacDonald’s P.E.I. squad has shown anything so far in the Canadian senior curling championships, it’s that patience is key.

The rink from the Charlottetown Curling Complex and Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club seemed to hit full stride on Tuesday afternoon. MacDonald, third John Likely, second Mark O’Rourke and lead Peter MacDonald downed Saskatchewan’s Gord Bell 9-3 in seven ends.

“The guys are playing awfully well,” MacDonald said. “Hopefully we’ll keep getting stronger and stronger every game, and keep rolling.”

After giving up a deuce in the first end, MacDonald scored a triple in the second. He posted one, two and three points, respectively, in the next three ends.

Saskatchewan went into the break down 9-2, but came back with a single in the sixth. Bell conceded after blanking the seventh.

It was a pivotal win for P.E.I., which was one of several teams heading into the draw with 3-2 records.

“Every win is big now,” MacDonald said. “The way I look at it, we may be able to afford one more loss, but there’s a lot of good teams out here.”

Along with the solid play of his teammates, he also credits a bit of luck for the lopsided win.

“The guys played well for me all day, and it helped that we got some good rolls and got a few lucky breaks during the game.”

P.E.I. plays Quebec’s Rob MacLean (4-2) this morning.

Women

Nova Scotia’s Colleen Pinkney sits atop the women’s division at 6-0.

The Truro rink edged Ontario’s Judy Oryniak 6-5 in an extra end Tuesday. Nova Scotia will face Newfoundland and Labrador (3-3) this morning while Ontario (1-5) takes on Alberta (3-3).

P.E.I.’s Nola Murphy dropped both of her games — 12-5 to Northern Ontario's Vicky Barrett and 15-3 to Saskatchewan. P.E.I. is 0-6.
