Saskatchewan’s Brock Virtue scored a 4-3 extra end victory Saturday over Prince Edward Island’s Eddie MacKenzie on opening day of the Tim Hortons Brier in Edmonton.
The Charlottetown Curling Complex rink scored a deuce in the 10th end to force an extra end. The team includes third Anson Carmody, second Alex MacFadyen, lead Sean Ledgerwood, fifth Phil Gorveatt and coach Les Rogers.
Virtue also scored singles in the third, eighth and ninth ends while MacKenzie had a single in the seventh.
P.E.I. lost 8-3 in eight ends to Brad Gushue's Newfoundland and Labrador rink in Saturday’s late game.
Gushue scored a triple in the fourth, deuces in first and sixth and a single in the seventh. MacKenzie scored singles in the second, fifth and eighth ends.
It was a reunion for half of the players as MacFadyen and Carmody were part of a junior team with Adam Casey, Brett Gallant and coach Peter Gallant, who are now part of Brad Gushue's Newfoundland and Labrador rink.
