Mayer nets pair

in Panther win

HALIFAX — Jordan Mayer scored twice in the second period and the UPEI Panthers hung on for a 2-1 win over the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey action Friday night.

Mayer’s goals came at 1:18 (on the power play) and 4:55 of the middle frame.

Dana Fraser, with a pair, Matthew Brenton and Alex Wall assisted on the goals.

The Panthers improved to 9-9-1 with the win.

Matt Tipoff scored for the Huskies (13-5-1) at the seven-minute mark of the third on the power play.

Wayne Savage made 29 saves for the Panthers and Anthony Peters made 23 for the Huskies.

Saint Mary’s went into the weekend as the fourth-ranked team in the country.

The Panthers are in Antigonish, N.S., tonight to take on the St. F.X. X-Men.

On other Panther news, the AUS judicial committee upheld the suspension of UPEI’s Mason Wilgosh. See story on page B3.

 

Streaking Caps

hammer Tigers

CAMPBELLTON — The Western Capitals extended their winning streak to eight games Friday night with a decisive 7-1 win over the Campbellton Tigers in Maritime Junior Hockey League action.

Jonathan Aubertin (2), Thomas Stavert (1-1), Christopher Caissy (1-1), Colton Parsons (1-1), Danny Chiasson (1-1) and Alex Gallant scored for the Capitals (27-6-2-0).

Mitchell Maynard picked up three assists.

The Capitals trailed 1-0 after the first period but stormed back with five goals in the second and outshot their hosts 45-24 overall.

Alex Dailey scored for the Tigers (11-23-1-1).

Goaltenders were Jacob Riley (Capitals) and Jeremy Gallant (Tigers).

The Capitals host the Metro Shipbuilders tonight at 7 at Eastlink Arena.

 

Lazaric breaks

tie for ManiacsL

MONTAGUE — Kayleb Lazaric broke the tie with the only goal of the shootout round as the Montague Maniacs edged the Sherwood Falcons 4-3 Friday night in the Island Junior Hockey League.

Lazaric also had a goal in regulation.

Luke MacIsaac and Luke Collings had the other goals for the Maniacs (9-12-0). Assists went to Chirs Stevenson, Jordan Gallant, Colby Bruce, AJ MacInnis and Matt Myers.

Craig Dougan, Josh Kirkpatrick and Matt McQuiad had the goals for the first-place Falcons (13-6-1).

Conner Lea, Brett MacDonald, Patrick Brazil, Mike Callaghan, Cody McQuirk and Harrison Nicholson each had an assist.

Alex Micalef was the winning goaltender over Devon Cudmore.

It was the second straight win for the Maniacs over the Falcons. Montague won 9-6 Wednesday in Charlottetown.
