MacKay scores extra end victory at P.E.I. junior curling championship

Draws set for 2:30 and 7 p.m. today at the Cornwall Curling Club

Kaleigh MacKay scored a single in an extra end Thursday afternoon to defeat Rachel O’Connor during draw two of the Pepsi Provincial Junior Curling Championship.

The MacKay rink of Kaleigh Peters, Alyssa Wright and Madeline Arsenault scored three in the first with the hammer and added singles in the third, fifth, seventh and eight ends.

The O’Connor-skipped squad, which includes Meghan Ching, Lauren Lenentine and Breanne Burgoyne, scored singles in the second, fourth and ninth and added deuces in the sixth and 10th to force an extra end.

It was the first game of the five-team tournament for the MacKay rink, which is a combination of players from Crapaud and the Silver Fox curling clubs.

O’Connor, from the host Cornwall Curling Club, falls to 0-2.

Men’s

Three teams got their first wins of the seven-team tournament.

Charlottetown’s Christopher Gallant defeated Summside’s Justin Campbell 11-3 with triples in the seventh and ninth ends.

Charlottetown’s Shawn Pitre downed Summerside’s Alex MacFadyen 8-3 in eight ends while Cornwall’s Tyler Smith defeated Montague’s Cody Dixon 9-6.

MacFadyen is 1-1 while Dixon is 0-2.

Action continues with draws at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m.

The finals are slated for Sunday.
