Simmrin Dhaliwal scored with three minutes to go in the first half to give British Columbia a 3-0 lead Thursday against the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers and they never looked back.

The Mountain United squad scored seven more times in the second half to beat the Prince Edward Island champs 10-0 at the under-16 soccer club nationals in Charlottetown.

Caitlin Millham, who scored the first two goals for B.C., said Dhaliwal’s goal was crucial.

“They were coming back at us pretty strong . . . to get that goal kind of set the tone,” she said.

Rangers coach Scott Boswall said his team had a chance to score to make it 2-1 and that the third goal was big.

“We were in tough today,” he said. “We had a good first half, but we came out flat in the second half and they buried a lot of goals early.”

Seina Kashima added two goals while singles went to Reetu Johal, Sessen Stevens, Margaret Hadley and Alessia Azermadhi.

The Rangers scored a goal on their own net.

It was British Columbia’s first game of the tournament.

“Everyone was probably equally excited as nervous,” Millham said. “We’re looking to win all our games, so we’re happy to start strong and keep going.” The Rangers will play for eighth place on Saturday.

“We came into the tournament ninth, so we can go one spot higher, that’s what we’re going for now,” Boswall said. “We just have to refocus.”

He said it is a great experience for the players to be able to compete at the nationals.

Erin McLeod, who was Canada’s keeper at the Olympics in London, met some of the players and signed autographs. The players also had the opportunity to get their picture taken with the bronze medallist.

She told them to train hard.

“Work on your skills behind the scenes,” McLeod said. “No one will never understand how much work you do, but they’ll get it as soon as you step onto the pitch.”

In other girls’ action, Nova Scotia defeated the Winsloe Charlottetown Royals 4-0, Saskatchewan blanked the Northwest Territories 6-0 while Manitoba and New Brunswick tied

1-1.

In boys’ action Thursday, Newfoundland and Labrador blanked Saskatchewan 3-0, British Columbia got past Quebec 3-2, Nova Scotia defeated New Brunswick 2-1 and Ontario beat Manitoba 2-1.
