Saint John club burns host P.E.I. Rocket for 10 goals in QMJHL contest

It was over shortly after it began at the Civic Centre.

The Saint John Sea Dogs lit up the P.E.I. Rocket for double-digit goals in a old-fashioned 10-1 thumping, including four first-period scores and two markers within 10 minutes of puck drop.

Saint John’s Oliver Cooper scored the eventual game-winning goal at 9:58 of the first period of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League game.

Then the fights began and over the rest of the first period and into the second frame.

Four fights, including two each by P.E.I.’s Alex Gallant and Saint John's Maxime Villemaire (against different opponents) which earned the pair ejections from the contest, and several roughing penalties later, things settled down into a relatively calm third period.

By the second intermission, Saint John had a 7-0 lead. The Dogs led 4-0 after first period.

“Just put the puck in deep and protect your teammates. Things got a little bit out of hand at times, but I thought we handled ourselves well,” said Cooper, who scored his 10th goal of the season. “(Between periods, head coach Gerard Gallant) told us to stay out of it. Be prepared if we have to, but he doesn’t want us starting a bunch of stuff.”

With the ugly loss, the Rocket drop to 17-34-2-2 and 1-6 against the Dogs this season.

P.E.I.’s lost three straight games including being outscored 15-1 over the last two games versus Saint John (40-14-0-2).

It’s the second time Saint John hit 10 goals against the Rocket this season.

P.E.I. remains two points behind idle Rouyn-Noranad for the last playoff spot.

Jonathan Huberdeau (2-2), Tomas Jurco (2-1), Maxime Villemaire (2), Charles Coyle (1-2), Danick Gauthier (1-1) and Stanislav Galiev scored the other Dogs goals.

Alex Noël netted the lone Rocket goal, his eighth of the season.

“Not a good game. I don’t know what to say. I don’t know why we didn't show up,” said Noël. “I think (we can recover). We have a pretty strong-minded team. It’s a hockey game like an other. We can lose 2-1 or 10-1. Either way, we have to be positive about what we did right and work on what we did wrong, a little bit more wrong tonight.”

Rocket goalie Maxime Lagacé was pulled after giving up four goals on eight shots.

Antoine Bibeau stopped 20 shots in relief.

Mathieu Corbeil saw 23 shots in the win in the Saint John nets.

P.E.I. hosts the Victoriaville Tigres on Saturday at 7 p.m. and the Quebec Remparts on Sunday at 4 p.m. at the Civic Centre.

i was at the past game and one thing i liked from the rocket is they had lots of fight in them and looks like dwyer has them gelling as a family .they stuck up for each other and had plenty of battles.no doubt turkey's team has 10times the talent as was seen that evening.heck he had his fourth line out on some powerplays. hopefully dwyer has free rein to build this team and when the rocket start turning a corner in the next year or two they open their wallet for an impact player or two.. hard to compete with owners like mccains and the irvings but how do teams like them bring in quality imports and a guy like charlie coyle joins the seadogs after the world juniors.the shark first round pick looks like the real deal .guys skates back like he's on a mission and offensively second to none.this seadog team hasn't even peaked yet .should repeat as memorial cup champ barring seroius injuries. st.john losing 17players this year rumor has it see what their rebuild will be like.

I will bet that after this season Saint John when Saint John rebuilds, they will be able to rebuild faster than the Rocket for 2 reasons.... 1) Gerard Gallant/Mike Kelly 2) Serge Savard Jr

Wallee you say you know some about hockey get your facts straight before saying other people have no clue about hockey, The Saint John seadogs came into the leage in 2005 not 2008, There is not doubt the Rocket have been disapointing since they have been here on the island. But I can see them being a strong team in the league in a couple year this is the youngest team in the Q people it's not like we are saying were a contender and getting beat. we are a last place team and everybody knows it and Savard and co are not trying to hide that. Dwyer will do a good job I believe in him, As for the Panthers they have also been struggling in the playoffs lately also, there last championship was 1991 over 20 years ago. I hate the negative talk about the Rocket these are 16-20 year old kids trying their best, UPEI has all kinds of former fourth line rocket on their roster but because UPEI has always been on PEI the Rocket came from montreal and every1 shits on Savard while he is good enough to keep the franchise here, when the team starts winning all of yas will come back I am sick and tired of people shitting on the Rocket I will keep coming back and am proud to be a Rocket fan

Corey, Thank you , YOU are correct , Saint John came in the league as an expansion team in 2005. Here are some facts since then pei's hightest standing in the league 8th. Saint john first two years in a row and looks like maybe a third year at #1 now, let me correct something else, i did not say people have no clue, i said the rocket management have no clue. they have had numerous opportunity with draft picks and they have been wasted. we change the coach every year or two to deflect the blame from not having the players. I do not blame Dwyer, he can only worh with what is given to him. The same as when Yannick Jean was firted. It was not his fault, we had NO players. Also, I do not blame the players, they can only do what their talents with do for them. We have been told year after year we are rebuilding, and yet again we are rebuilding. I am not going to change your opinions, however, if you have not been to a UPEI game go watch it. The hockey is faster, cleaner, more exciting. Its not whether you win or lose but how the game is played. Agian, they are miles above the hockey quality. Enjoy your next years watching the Rocket. All the best.

Rocket fan or not 1,100 fans in any rink on PEI to see that team is a disgrace. Real hockey fans would go watch St.John even if not interested in the Rocket.....In their lineup they had 10 drafted players 4 first rounders and 5 players that played world junior hockey this year. They have at least 5 future NHL players and likely a future NHL coach who just happens to be an Islander....Nice show of support PEI... yeah you all go watch the Panthers and see all the former 4th line Rocket players......what a joke you should all be ashamed to call yourself hockey fans. There were likely 300 fans down from Sside to see Turk alone.

Last night showed how far back the PEI Rocket are compared to the elite teams in the league. Year after year we hear how 'next' year the team will be better. In fact they get worse each year. Saint John joined the league in 2008, a short four years ago. Look at their results. It shows you how bad our team is managed, or should I say mismanaged. They have no clue on what they are doing. I have been a season ticket holder since they came to PEI and I am also finished after this year. The comment about UPEI players by KIRBPYE indicates he does not have a clue about hockey. The hockey at the university level is MILES above the Q. Thats where I will be next year.

Yesterdays Guardian sports headline, "Rocket ready to 'compete'." I really didn't see much compete last night. Other than a few fights that were mildly entertaining at best; this team showed nothing last night. Comparing these two teams is like comparing St. John Seadogs to the Detroit RedWings level. The Rocket are so far back in the skill level it isn't funny. Why try for a play-off berth. Lets try for the number 1 pick and the heck with the post-season. We'd only draw the Seadogs anyhow, and we know where that would put us(4 and out; as usual!) I for one have no intention of renewing my longstanding season ticket. I will go see a few more Panthers games and catch the odd Rocket game of interest next season. I'm tired of the same old same old! Thanks for the memories!

1,100 fans, what does that tell you. There will be about 900 this weekend when they get blown out by two more powerhouse teams. What a terrible mis managed team

I was at the game lastnight and I have to say I was just discusted with how the Rocket played they definately didn't show up to play now I no they were up against a power house in Saint John but boy's there was no effort what so ever in your game lastnight and boys your in a dog fight for the last playoff position I mean you don't deserve to be there anyway but it would be nice to get in with it being this close. You could of at least taken a shot from center ice just to try and get the puck on net. I feel bad for coach Dwyer during the stopage in the first he was trying everything he could to get his players going but they just sat there drinking there juice or water. He don't have much to work with thats for sure.Another thing I want to mention and don't understand is WHEN A PLAYER FROM SAINT JOHN GETS EJECTED FOR 2ND FIGHT HOW DOES HE HAVE THE RIGHT TO COME BACK PLAY THE 3RD PERIOD..... Did Saint John pay the refs so that this player could come back to try and get his hat trick...Rocket should of protested the game for ilegal player what a discrace.

To Donik Villemaire was allowed to play because Gallant was the instigator in the second fight and according to rule 20.4 in the rulebook, if the opponent (in this case Gallant) is the instigator, the game misconduct for the other player goes away, even if it's their second fight.
