UPEI basketball teams get swept on N.S. road trip

Panthers win both weekend home games in women's hockey

The two UPEI Panther basketball teams dropped their games in Nova Scotia over the weekend.

The UPEI men lost 70-69 in overtime to the St. F.X. X-Men in Antigonish, N.S., on Sunday  after seeing their six-game winning streak come to end Saturday with a 111-90 loss to the Cape Breton Capers in Sydney, N.S.

The women Panthers lost 98-67 to the St. F.X. X-Women on Sunday and 100-63 to the Capers on Saturday.

In women’s hockey, the UPEI squad swept their weekend games at MacLauchlan Arena, beating Dalhousie 3-2 in a shootout on Sunday and downing Moncton 3-1 on Saturday.

Following is a recap of the games:

 

MEN’S BASKETBALL

St. F.X. 70 UPEI 69, OT

ANTIGONISH, N.S. — Terry Thomas scored 15 points and Jeremy Dunn added 14 to lead the X-Men to the overtime victory on Sunday.

Jonathan Cooper paced the Panthers (12-5) with 22 points, followed by Manock Lual with 16 and Donathan Moss with 13.

The teams were tied 35-35 at the half and the X-Men (12-4) led 44-43 after three quarters.

The Panthers are at Acadia on Friday and Saturday.

 

UPEI 90 at Cape Breton 111

SYDNEY, N.S. — Jimmy Dorsey led the Capers (10-6) with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 12 assists. 

Julian Smith had 22 points and  A.J. Geugjes posted 20.

Geoff Doane had 22 points to lead UPEI while Jonathan Cooper chipped in with 13 and Donathan Moss and Manock Lual each had 12.

 

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

ST. F.X. 98 UPEI 67

ANTIGONISH, N.S. — The X-Women handed the Panthers their second lopsided loss of the weekend on Sunday.

Vanessa Pickard with 22 points and Brittney Brown with 13 led St. F.X. (8-8)

Amy Gough led UPEI (2-15)  with 22 points while Terrilyn Herrick had 10, followed by Laura Power (9) and Jenna Jones (8).

St. F.X. led 42-34 at the half.

 

Cape Breton 100 UPEI 63

SYDNEY, N.S. — Cassie Cooke scored a game-high 36 points to lead the Capers past the Panthers on Saturday.

Jahlica Kirnon had 18 points and Stephanie Toxopeus added 16 for Cape Breton (11-5), which led 39-13 after the first quarter and 68-31 at the half.

Emily MacEachern with 14 points and Gough with 12 led UPEI.

The Panthers are at Acadia on Friday and Saturday.

 

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

UPEI 3 Dalhousie 2 SO

Christine Kelly scored the winning goal in the shootout to give the UPEI Panthers a 3-2 win over the Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey action at MacLauchlan Arena.

Saturday, the Panthers skated to a 3-1 home win over the Moncton Blue Eagles.

Kelly also had a regulation goal  for the Panthers (12-9-0).

Ferran Brown also scored for UPEI. Kelsey O’Donnell, Janelle MacKenzie, Ashley Fitzpatrick and Justine Wong each had an assist.

Jocelyne Leblanc and Robin Nicholson scored for the Tigers (6-12-3), who rallied from a 2-0 deficit with two third-period goals.

Kristy Dobson made 21 saves for the Panthers while Zoe Zivolak made 41 for the Tigers.

The Panthers will host the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday at 7 p.m.

 

UPEI 3 Moncton 1

Saturday, the Panthers scored twice on the power play to beat the Blue Eagles.

Laura Bradley, from Jamielynn Donaldson and Ashley Fitzpatrick, gave UPEI a 1-0 lead at 9:18 of the second period.

Amber Gaudette, from Bradley and Samantha Sweet, made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at 16:54.

Marie-Pier Arsenault scored for Moncton (16-3-1) on the power play 1:24 later.

Keirstin Visser put the Panthers back up by two goals with her power-play goal 43 seconds into the third.

Kelsey O’Donnell and Ferran Brown assisted on the goal.

Kristy  Dobson made 21 saves for UPEI and Kathy Desjardins made 26 for Moncton.
