SUMMERSIDE Charles Grant recorded a 24-save shutout in the Yarmouth Mariners' 3-0 victory over the Summerside Western Capitals on Sunday afternoon.
The MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) game attracted 797 fans to EastLink Arena.
The win was a big one for the Mariners, who came into their third game in less than 72 hours with back-to-back losses. The Caps were playing their first game since Wednesday.
It was the first meeting between the teams since an incident earlier this month in Yarmouth, and it didn't take the teams long to get acquainted with each other. The Capitals' Pat McGrath and Yarmouth's Matt Tomah each received 10-minute misconducts in the warmup.
Referee Thane Arsenault kept a tight lid on things in the game that featured three third-period fights, included a spirited bout between the Caps O Brandon Carter and Braden Mercier.
Andrew Walker (1-1), Ryan Nickerson (1-1) and Nick Booth scored for the Mariners (26-14-1-2).
Overall, the Mariners, who led 1-0 after the first and second periods, outshot the Caps 37-26. Landon Noel was between the pipes for the Caps (20-17-1-4).
The Mariners went 2-for-7 on the power play while the Caps were 0-for-2.
The game's three stars were:
1. Ryan Nickerson (Mariners), 2. Charles Grant (Mariners), 3. Landon Noel (Capitals).
The Capitals host the Dieppe Commandos on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
