Basketball Panthers strengthen hold on first with 95-77 win over Sea-Hawks

The UPEI Panthers strengthened their hold on first place in the Atlantic University Sport standings with a 95-77 win over the last-place Memorial Sea-Hawks Saturday night.

Small forward Donnie Moss led the Panthers with 26 points, while Manock Lual chipped in 22 points and 10 rebounds.

Sea-Hawks' forward Jason Shepherd led all players with 29 points. Mike Helsby chipped in 17 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.

UPEI entered the half with only a one-point advantage over Memorial, leading 45-44.

But the Panthers shot the lights out in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Sea-Hawks 26-11 to win big.

UPEI improved to 10-3 with the win, and remain two points up on Acadia. The Axemen have two games in hand, however.

The Sea-Hawks dropped to 1-12 with the loss.

The teams will square off again Sunday at 3 p.m.

Women's basketball

The UPEI Panthers allowed a 40-26 halftime lead slip away in a 61-58 loss to Memorial.

Newfoundland-native Laura Power missed a three-pointer in the dying seconds that would have tied the game.

Captain Katie Moore was named Panthers' player of the game as she led the team in scoring with 14 points, and added seven boards.

Terrilyn Herrick also had a strong game with 13 points and eight rebounds.

Alexandria Forsey was the Sea-Hawks player of the game with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Sea-Hawks' small forward Robyn O'Rielly led all players with 17 points, while guard Kim Devison added 14 in the win.

With the loss, the Panthers drop to 2-11 on the year, while the Sea-Hawks improve to 7-6.

The rematch goes Sunday at 1 p.m. in Charlottetown.
