UPEI defenceman Reggie Traccitto scored on a backhand shot to give the men's hockey Panthers a 4-3 overtime win over the Acadia Axemen in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action at MacLauchlan Arena Saturday night.

The win helped UPEI sweep the home weekend after downing the Dalhousie Tigers in a come-from-behind 4-2 win Friday night.

The Panthers (30) stay at fifth in the competitive AUS standings, four points behind the leading UNB Varsity Reds (34). There is a three-way tie for second place between Saint Mary's, Acadia and Moncton with 32 points each.

UPEI forward Harrison McIver opened up the scoring Saturday with a short-handed goal at 3:04 in the first period. McIver and forward Jordan Knox rushed Acadia goaltender and former P.E.I. Rocket Evan Mosher, with Knox passing across the net to McIver to pick up the assist.

Traccitto got his first goal of the night during a powerplay at 19:35 in the first period.

UPEI's Matt Carter found the net at 6:03 in the second period to give the Panthers a 3-0 lead.

Acadia fought back in the third period with Liam Heels scoring at 9:36 and K.C. Brown finding the net at 13:02.

With less than two minutes left in the game, Acadia forward Joe Gaynor scored on a powerplay to bring the match into overtime.

The extra period didn't last long, with UPEI forward Alex Wall making a slick pass to Traccitto who sealed the game with a backhand shot only 57 seconds in.

UPEI netminder Mavric Parks stopped 34 of 37 shots faced while Mosher blocked 32 of 28.

The weekend wins lifted UPEI's regular season record to 15-8.

The Panthers hit the road for Nova Scotia next weekend to face Dalhousie in Halifax Friday and Acadia in Wolfville Saturday. Game times are 7 p.m.
