Demetrius Ferguson was named most valuable player during the Holland College Hurricanes Football  Club’s annual awards banquet in Charlottetown recently.

Ferguson received the Hilton Trophy after amassing 10 touchdowns, including seven on kick returns, two on interceptions and one on the ground, despite playing with a cast on his wrist this season.

Mike Lyriotokis, a former UPEI Panther All-Canadian and member of the P.E.I. Football Hall of Fame, presented the trophy to the crowd-pleasing Ferguson.

The club also recognized the extraordinary contributions of seven other players in its Atlantic Football League championship season and paid tribute to an exceptional booster club member at the banquet.

Linebacker Ben Sherren received the most improved player award, linebacker Thomas McCabe received the student-athlete of the year award while the APM Construction Services defensive player of the year was middle linebacker and team leader Marcus Dunphy, who completed his playing eligibility this season.

For the second year in a row, offensive guard Owen MacWilliams was chosen as lineman of the year.

Running back Dave Clark received the APM Construction Services offensive player of the year award.

Clark, who rushed for 1,498 yards and scored 15 touchdowns this season, was also in his final year of eligibility.

Defensive end Ryan Adams, who led the team in tackles, was named rookie of the year.

The special teams player of the year was Stephen Corcoran and the award for most dedicated player went to quarterback Nick Hunsley.

Hunsley passed for almost 1,600 yards and threw 14 touchdown passes and only five interceptions.

The team also presented an award to booster club member Gus Cameron for his support of the team.

In their season season in the AFL, the Hurricanes finished atop the standings in the regular season and captured the league championship with a 28-0 win over the UNB Fredericton Red Bombers at MacAdam Field recently.

The Hurricanes will hold tryouts and mini-camps in the spring as they prepare to defend their title in the 2012 season.
