UPEI soccer teams advance to Atlantic conference finals

The two UPEI Panther soccer teams will be playing for Atlantic University Sport championships on Sunday.

At the AUS women’s championship tournament Saturday at Fredericton, N.B., Sara Stewart scored in the overtime half to give the Panthers a 1-0 win over defending champion Cape Breton Capers.

Stewart’s unassisted goal came at the 100:45 mark of the game.

Chanelle Roy recorded the shutout.

The Panthers will play the Dalhousie Tigers in the women’s final Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Tigers downed the Saint Mary’s Huskies 3-2 in the other semifinal game on Saturday.

At the men’s tournament in Sydney, N.S., the Panthers edged the Dalhousie Tigers 2-1 in semifinal play.

Saint Mary’s beat host Cape Breton 4-1 in the other semifinal.

UPEI and Saint Mary’s will play for the championship Sunday at 1 p.m.

    Saw the women's game on the Net--well done. Looks like a great year for UPEI sports!
