Four members of the UPEI Panthers women’s rugby team were named Atlantic University Sport all-stars Thursday.
Inside centre Kaitlin Richard of Summerside, hooker Sumara Profit of Charlottetown, scrum half Jalessa Villard of Kinkora and blindside flanker Rebecca Robison of Charlottetown were all honoured.
It is the highest number of UPEI all-stars since 2004, said head coach Shannon Atkins.
“This is a testament to the skill on our team and the respect that we have within the league,” said Atkins.
While Richard and Robison have graduated from the team, Profit and Villard will return next season.
Atkins said the duo will help the Panthers keep up the momentum from this club’s 3-3 season.
Souris rookie Jorie Rose, an openside flanker with the Saint Mary’s Huskies, was also named an all-star.
The all-stars were selected by the conference’s four head coaches following the regular season.
St. F.X.’s third-year Tyson Beukeboom was named MVP for the second straight time.
Acadia’s Deidre Rees was chosen as rookie of the year, while Saint Mary’s Jessica Frenette took home the student-athlete community service award.
St. F.X. coach Mike Cavanagh was named coach of the year for the sixth time.
Acadia and St. F.X. are playing for the AUS championship this weekend.
Acadia defeated UPEI in the semifinal game last weekend.
