SUMMERSIDE — The A section final is now set at the 2011 Labatt Tankard provincial men’s curling championship at the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

Peter Gallant and Eddie MacKenzie will meet in a battle of 3-0 Charlottetown Curling Club rinks today at 2 p.m.

Gallant downed defending champion Rod MacDonald of the Charlottetown Curling Club rink 10-2, and MacKenzie topped clubmate Robert Campbell 9-6.

MacDonald fell to 2-1 while Campbell, who is the No. 1 seed in the triple-knockout event, dropped to 1-1.

In other evening games,  Kevin Champion  defeated David Ross 7-3 and Bill Hope topped Rob Warren by an identical score in battles featuring four Charlottetown rinks.

In the morning games, Campbell downed Warren 7-3, Hope trimmed the Silver Fox’s Grant Somers 9-3 and MacKenzie doubled Champion 8-4.

The afternoon draws featured John Likely trimming Calvin Smith 12-3 in a head-to-head meeting between two Charlottetown rinks, and Mel Bernard edged Tom Fetterly 7-6 in an all-Summerside clash.

After exchanging single points in the first three ends with MacDonald, Gallant scored a deuce with the hammer in the fourth end to go up 3-2.

Gallant and his team of Brett Gallant, Anson Carmody and Jeff Wilson stole three in the fifth end and four more in the sixth. It was then time for handshakes.

Meanwhile, MacKenzie used last-rock advantage to count a deuce in the second end for an early 2-0 lead. Then, after Campbell got one point back in the third end, MacKenzie had a four-ender with the hammer in the fourth end for a 6-1 lead.

Campbell scored back-to-back deuces in the fifth and sixth ends to close to within 6-5.

The rinks then exchanged single points with last-rock advantage in the next two ends, and MacKenzie scored two points in the ninth.

MacKenzie’s teammates are Mike Gaudet, Mike Dillon and Alex MacFadyen.

Somers, Fetterly, Desrosiers, Ross, Smith and Barry Cameron of The Fox all have two losses and will face must-win situations in their next game.

The winning rink will represent P.E.I. at the Tim Hortons Brier in London, Ont., from March 5 to 13.
