Four teams still in chase for crown

Four teams are left in the chase for the 2010 Canadian senior men’s fast pitch championship in Charlottetown.

The defending champion Kitchener Rivershark Twins, host P.E.I. Fawcetts, Three Cheers Pub from Newfoundland and Labrador and the Owen Sound Selects of Ontario will wrap up the tournament Sunday.

The first playoff game on Sunday is scheduled for 10 a.m., with  Owen Sound playing Three Cheers Pub. The winner will go on to semifinal  at noon against the Fawcetts. The championship game is slated for 2:30 p.m.

Following is a recap of games on Friday:

 

Owen Sound 6 

Brookfield, N.S. 2 

Brookfield was playing its fifth game in 24 hours, having gone through two round-robin games plus two tiebreakers Thursday. Owen Sound jumped out to a 6-0 lead through two innings and never looked  Brad Robinson doubled twice and homered for the winners, driving in four runs. Joel Isenor singled twice for Brookfield.

 

Fredericton 9 

Halifax 0 (five inn.) 

The New Brunswick reps roared out to a five-run lead after a half-inning and added four more in the third. Winning pitcher Bryan Newton threw a three-hitter and fanned 14.

 

Kitchener 1 

West Side Charlies, N.L. 0

Ryan Wolfe drilled a 3-1, two-out pitch over the left-field fence as Kitchener clinched a medal. Don Scott threw a no-hitter and struck out 10.

 

Owen Sound 9 

West Side Charlies, N.L. 6 

Owen Sound won a two-hour, 23-minute marathon, plating seven runs in the first inning and one in the second and surviving a rally by the Newfoundlanders that saw them score six times in the second. Andrew Scott led the way for the Selects with two singles, a triple and three RBIs.

 

Three Cheers Pub, N.L. 5 

Fredericton 3

Stephen Mullaley’s one-out, two-run walkoff homer in the bottom of the seventh kept the Newfoundland and Labrador side alive and eliminated Fredericton. Mullaley was three-for-four in the contest and drove in four runs. Rene Goguen had a pair of hits in a losing cause.

Pitcher - Matt Bramwell, Halifax.

Catcher - Ryan Boland, West Side Charlies, N.L.

First base - Trevor Boutilier, Halifax.

Second base - Jody Eidt, Kitchener, Ont.

Third base - Chris Craig, P.E.i. Fawcetts.

Shortstop - Justin Gill, Three Cheers Pub, N.L.

Outfield - Jeff Ellsworth, P.E.I. Fawcetts; Brad Ezekiel, Three Cheers Pub; Mathieu Roy, Quebec.

Utility - Jeremy Tracy, Fredericton.

Individual Awards

Top hitter - Jason Hill, Three Cheers Pub, N.L. (.550 batting average, two home runs, 10 RBI).

Top pitcher - Paul Koert, Kitchener, Ont. (2-0 record, 1.45 earned-run average.

Round-robin MVP - Sean Whitten, Three Cheers Pub, N.L. (4-0 record, 1.75 earned-run average.
