Plenty of new faces on the roster

The P.E.I. Rocket begins the 2010-11 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League season today with player registration and meetings at Pownal.

Players are expected to arrive at the Pownal Sports Centre about 2 p.m.

Changes in the off-season mean a new-look Rocket team from last season. 

Gone are forwards Benjamin Casavant, 19, and Jarrad Struthers, 20, and defenceman and former captain Jean-Philippe Mathieu, 19, through trades. 

Each played with the Rocket for at least 1 1/2 seasons. Mathieu was a fourth-round pick in 2008.

Jordon Southorn, a first- round pick in 2006, Éric Bouchard and Louis-Philippe Lacroix, all 20, are not on the Rocket camp roster.

In are forwards Philippe Paradis, 19, Uigg native Travis MacIsaac, 20, Czech Republic centre Andrej Nestrasil, 19, and bookend wingers Louick Marcotte and Victor Provencher, both first-round draft picks in 2010.

Island players in camp include Jeremy Balderston (Cornwall), Evan Carmody (Charlottetown), Josh Currie (Charlottetown), Matt Kelly (Summerside), Jamie MacIntyre (Charlottetown), Brad MacKenzie (Charlottetown), Conor McAleer (Charlottetown), Jordan Moore (Charlottetown), Matthew Stead (Hunter River) and Brandon Weir (Stratford).

On-ice workouts begin Wednesday at 9 a.m. following by a second session at 10:15 a.m., then an inter-squad game at 3 p.m.

All workouts are open to the public.

The Rocket plays its first pre-season game Friday versus Cape Breton. Game time is 7 p.m. in Pownal. 

Tickets are $5 for season ticket holders, $7 for non-season ticket holders and are available at Charlottetown Civic Centre box office, the Rocket office, at training camp in Pownal and game day at the door.
