Six people at CBC Prince Edward Island were informed Wednesday their positions are no longer needed.
Two are taking early retirement and won't be replaced. The other four positions are being eliminated.
Ian Pitre, a veteran TV reporter, and Barry Vessey, a producer with Island Morning, are both taking early retirement.
Kerry Campbell, a CBC radio reporter, was told his position is now redundant.
Two television veterans, Claire Nantes, who has been with CBC for 29 years, and Bev Murphy, are also facing layoffs. Nantes is an assignment editor with Compass. Murphy is a producer with the same show.
Doris MacWilliams, who works in administration, has also had her position eliminated.
It will be about six weeks before the changes come into effect but the impact may go much further.
Because of union bumping, temporary employees including Lindsay Carroll and Barb Taylor, who both work in radio, and Steve Bruce, who works in television, could be affected.
Two other television reporters are taking leave and they too may not be replaced. That leaves the CBC with a handful of TV reporters, although the CBC is moving towards a single newsroom in Charlottetown combining TV, radio and online.
In March, the public broadcaster said that about 393 jobs would have to be cut in its English-language service to make up for an $85-million budget shortfall.
Brendan Elliott, president of the Canadian Media Guild's Prince Edward Island chapter, says the cuts are leaving staff to wonder how they are going to do more with less.
CBC is expanding its supper-hour news show, Compass, to 90 minutes in late August. It is also adding a new regional news show at 11 p.m.
CBC will be doing that with less staff.
Elliott said the union will continue to work to try and save the positions being cut.
"We're going to leave no stone unturned."

CBC is such a vibrant and culturally rich public service, it is a dismay to see such cuts. I wish the best to those who find they must leave their jobs and to those who must work harder to fill in the gaps left.

Barb Taylor must have left the Guardian for the CBC at least ten years ago - what kind of HR policies keep someone temporary for a decade?
