PEAKES - A house fire took the home of John Stewart on the St. Patrick's Road Wednesday afternoon just two days before Christmas.
The East River Fire Department responded to the blaze around 11 a.m. on the rural road between St. Teresa and Mount Stewart and spent hours in the cold rain.
The smoke billowing from the house was spotted by a neighbour who phoned in the alert.
The brigade quelled the flames and then spent hours battling the smouldering smoke that continued in the walls and roof of the older farm-style home.
"It's of undetermined origin right now," said provincial deputy fire marshal Dave Rossiter, who was on the scene.
"I don't know if we'll be able to find out because everything is so soggy."
Rossiter ruled out a wood stove on a preliminary hunch and said the fire appeared to have been created in the centre of the house since the middle portion of the roof collapsed inward.
The owner, who lives alone, was away at the time of the fire and there were no injuries.
