When did the rules of the road become non-existent and the roads become a horn-blowing free-for-all? Yesterday I was in the Grafton/Water street yield lane and I had the right of way because the Water Street side of the lights was going green. Halfway out the lane, I heard a blasting horn as a car ran the red light. Last weekend on Riverside Drive, I had my flasher on. Nobody was coming, so just as I merged into the right lane the car behind me actually sped up and honked his horn as if I cut him off. Take note, when I started my merge, this car was two car lengths back.
Did I miss the memo stating the road is a drive-at-your-own-risk free-for- all from now on?
Two summers ago on the University Avenue strip I had a car so close behind me all I could see was the windshield and the driver.
Then there’s Kent Street. It's a miracle that nobody has been killed jaywalking. Pedestrians come out of everywhere without looking for cars coming.
Finally the free-for-all road moment that's burned in my memory for life. It took place five or six years ago on Kent Street. One Friday night, I came out of Tim’s and as I got into my car, I saw these two rigs going at speeds as if they were on the set of Bullitt, the greatest car-chase movie of all time. They were drag-racing side by side to see who would make the amber light first on this one-way street. They were going so fast that if a jaywalker had walked out in front of them, they would have hit him and would have easily thrown him 15 feet in the air. I want my roads back with some hint of respect. The roads now are an accident waiting to happen.
