The spate of letters about the HST is interesting. One thing seems to be lost on some letter writers, including the gentleman in the June 25th issue suggesting that Mr. Sheridan needs to present evidence that "his HST idea is great for us Islanders." It is simply this: the HST is a tax, it is a means of raising revenue. It is not something to make our lives great.

If we want hospitals, roads, 'waves' at Borden, expense accounts for MLAs' lunches, we need tax revenue and HST is a means to that end. If the tax doesn't come from HST, it will have to come from somewhere else.

Let's go with the HST. It comes with a nice upfront payment from Ottawa and we need the cash.

Jim McDougall,

Stratford
