Editor:
Having watched the leaders’ debate, listening with an open mind, I came to the conclusion it was more like a debacle than a debate.
The only leader who made sense about what would get P.E.I. out of the serious debt that we are in was Sharon Labchuk. Don’t get me wrong, her ideas are not a quick fix but a long-term goal.
Too often politicians work on ideas that will assure them they will be voted into government, then spend thousands or even millions of dollars on things that wouldn’t get them elected, until another election is nearing, when they repeat the same pattern with new promises.
Sharon Labchuk talked respectfully and sensibly about a way to turn this Island into a clean environment not only for our children and grandchildren, but a unique place for tourists to visit. Tourism income would soar as would farming and fishing.
Think about it, we are a province surrounded by the ocean, which gives us a real opportunity to have clean air, being not attached to another province where the wind could blow their pesticides into our clean spaces.
This cannot happen overnight, but look at our Waste Watch program. That is a beginning. We should move on to eventually having all our farms and even our home gardens, and lawns growing organically. Eventually introduce a law that makes it illegal to sell pesticides in our stores. Money should be provided to farmers to help them afford to make this change.
Can you imagine the income generated through tourism, advertising “Clean air, clean water, clean (organic) food”?
For the first time in my life I am voting Green.
