Why do we see so many ads on Used P.E.I. and Kijji to try and sell dogs and cats? People are breeding different breeds and trying to make $400 to $600 per puppy or cat. OK if you are low income this may be attractive: four pups at $400 each is a good take. And yet we have the Humane Society offering animals with fees as an option. Please do not get me started on people who are trying to give up their dogs and cats because they are moving, they have no time for the animal, someone has suddenly become allergic or whatever reason they have.

My message is simple. If you take a dog or cat into your family, it is for life. Educate yourself on how long a dog or cat lives. OK you want a dog or cat, then adopt from a shelter. They will be spayed/neutered and checked out by a vet. You will get a friend who will give you unconditional love and respect. All they will ask is you provide the basics in food and water and your love and respect. And what do you and your family get in return? A beautiful companion animal who will provide you with endless love and joy.

Please P.E.I. do not buy from breeders. Adopt from the Humane Society. Together we need to stop this over-population of cats and dogs. If you want a cat or dog, bring your loved ones to the Humane Society and check out all the cool dogs and cats.
