Kudos to city of Charlottetown for making shelters available

Re: a recent front-page item in The Guardian (“Taking shape”,  Jan. 14th), it is encouraging to see that the City of Charlottetown is finally planning to have shelters available during extended power outages. It is something that should have been in place long ago. A critical part of that plan is an effective communication system to inform those in need when extended power outages occur. Extreme weather events that result in power outages often happen overnight or on weekends when announcements of this nature are not always possible via local media - i.e radio stations and television. While it is fashionable these days to disseminate information on social media, not everyone has access, especially those most vulnerable: seniors, those who are disabled or disadvantaged, etc. In fact, a plan such as this should be in place in other towns and communities across the entire Island.
