Editor: I listened with mounting irritation to Health Minister Doug Currie state the family medicine sponsorship program has been a success. Utter nonsense. It has all but failed in recruiting family physicians to this province, attracting two medical students since inception.
I heard the excuses, shook my head in disbelief and wondered why a young Canadian woman from this province studying medicine internationally was dismissed after an impassioned plea for eligibility. She desperately wanted to return home, wrote Health P.E.I. expressing her keen interest in recruitment and retention (three- to five-year return of service) and was flatly refused.
All Canadian international medical students are ineligible, regardless of the quality of their medical educations or their willingness to practice in a designated rural community for three to five years. What a terrible waste of valuable resources.
