Editor: Having just finished reading the recent re-print by Island authors and historians David Weale and Harry Baglole, I highly recommend the book as a backdrop to the current 2014 celebrations. The authors have eloquently captured a portrait of P.E.I. during the critical pre-Confederation era. The intrigue, the degree of public awareness of the implications, and thought processes of many Islanders during this time is fascinating.
For me, as an Islander with roots dating to the mid-1700s, it triggered long standing and perhaps subconscious feelings of my "Island mentality." It also captures a subliminal sense of loss and dare I say it; shame for our dependence on federal largess. For the CFAs, who I'm sure share an growing attachment to P.E.I., this book will enlighten you as to some of our "touchiness" when it comes to our undying loyalty and quick offense to any perceived slight against the Island.
Well done Weale and Baglole! A great 2014 summer read for all.
